Naturalization by Resolution
The President may grant Surinamese nationality to a person who:
- Has a foreign nationality or is stateless but was born in Suriname;
- Has at one time possessed the Surinamese nationality and who currently possesses a foreign nationality or is stateless;
- The PSA resident (Persons of Surinamese descent with a PSA document);
Naturalization by law
Naturalization by Act pursuant to art. 8 WNI;
In order to be able to submit a request for naturalization, the applicant must:
- Be 18 years and older;
- Have lost their Surinamese nationality or have had their residence or main residence in Suriname during the past five years;
- Or have been born in Suriname to parents without or of unknown nationality;
Note: If the applicant belongs to another country, he may be required to submit proof that the legislation of that country does not constitute an obstacle to his naturalization in Suriname.
Naturalization by option of eighteen-year-old born in Suriname
If the child has reached the age of majority (18 years) and was born in Suriname from parents with a foreign nationality and also resides or is staying in Suriname, he can apply for Surinamese nationality.
Naturalization due to marriage can be applied for in case:
- A foreign national may qualify for Surinamese nationality after marriage to a Surinamese. The foreign national must prove that he or she has resided in Suriname for 5 consecutive years.
- When the foreigner has been married for two years and are still married and have lived with the spouse or is still living at the same address for two years
- When it can be shown that children were born from the relationship of the spouses, whether or not before the marriage
Note: Once you obtained the Surinamese nationality, you can also apply for the Suriname passport and the Electronical Identification Card (E-ID) of Suriname
